Chronic Respiratory Failure: Coding, Reimbursement and Compliance

This webinar will visit the correct coding for Respiratory Failure and the clinical parameters required to support the diagnosis. An in-depth review of pathophysiology and diagnostic parameters used to support this complex diagnosis will be presented. Identifying the Acute, Chronic and Acute on Chronic criteria for diagnosis assignment will be covered. Adult and pediatric clinical parameters will be discussed. Acute respiratory failure is most often a symptom of a larger problem. When is it appropriate to code this as the Principal Diagnosis? We will discuss the difference between hypoxic versus hypercapnic respiratory failure and the laboratory data used to establish the diagnosis. Lastly there will be a discussion on when and how to query appropriately for this diagnosis.

Presenter Biography:

Nancy Reading, RN, BS, CPC, CPC-I, CPC-P, has spent 45 years in Health care as a Nurse and Coder. She has worked in the Professional, Hospital Outpatient and Inpatient Hospital settings. Her career includes having her own consulting business, working for large University Medical Centers, Medicaid, and as a Medicare specialist for the country’s largest private third party payer. She is a 2-time past AAPC Local Chapter president, Past National Advisory Board member and she previously worked for AAPC as VP of Education. Nancy is currently a DRG Auditor for CERIS.
